Lotsa bikes and Eight Bells

.

We woke to a gorgeous day in George this morning. It would have been a sin not to ride…

A group of us got together to ride to Eight Bells on the Robertson Pass for lunch. The Robertson Pass is a tar Pass between Mosselbay and Oudtshoorn, but we took the gravel option of course.

Right from the word go the scenery was stunning – complementing a stunning day.

We rode at a leisurely pace with lots of photo stops and we weren’t the only ones taking advantage of the bike riding weather.

We followed the gravel past Botlierskop Game Farm (always a favorite) where we saw Springbuck, Wildebeest, Eland, Zebra and various other game, but the Rhino and Giraffe were elusive today.

On a good day you can see them from up close

This route has lots of mini “passes” and twisties

Once we reached Eight Bells Mountain Inn it was clear that lots of other bikers had the same idea…

The place was busy. It took us over 2 hours to get lunch and back on the road again – and what a road it is...
(Check the road climbing out of the kloof and going over the hill in the background...)

We encountered some more wildlife on the way

Seems like one and all was taking advantage of the sunny day after the recent snowfalls.

Close to George we had another stop...

...next thing we knew a new BMW X Challenge pulled up

I took the photo, but when he heard it might be on Wild Dogs he decided I needed a better photo:

If you want to play this bike seems to be the business!

Well, all good things come to an end.

All in all we had a great day!

Sunday Morning Meander

.

On Sunday morning we had a nice ride on a circle route that crossed Montagu Pass twice. It was to be a nice and scenic outride, but short enough to be back in time for Mother’s day lunch. The ride was organized by Eco Nation as an initiative to have likeminded riders ride together regardless of the brand of bike they ride. And where better to start such an initiative than the Southern Cape?

After we met at the gathering point we set out for Montagu Pass.

It was a beautiful day with perfect weather for riding in this idyllic setting.

Imagine having this just a few kilometers from you doorstep…

Just across the mountain you approach the little settlement Herold…

… and continue on towards Paarde Poort.

This road leads into the Klein Karoo – the riders from the big ride in April will recognize the area.

We followed the Heimersrivier road with regular photo stops and to take in the Klein Karoo scenery.

… and continued to Eseljagpoort:

Just through this Poort you join up with the Langkloof road. Usually we avoid tar like the plague, but on this short section the scenery is stunning.

This is just a short circle route but the contrasts between the Southern Cape and Klein Karoo landscapes gives you a memorable ride in 2 hours. From the Langkloof road it’s back over Montagu Pass en route to George.
