After the Moon...

We all got up one by one. All except LGF who slept like a log. Some pics:

There was no hurry. We made a fire, leisurely packed our stuff and still LGF slept.



When he eventually woke up we all had chirps about how it was almost afternoon already. He asked Dusty what the time was and she said 10:30! (It was nowhere near that). In an amazing coincidence LGF's watch stopped during the night and he fully believed what she said.

There were numerous comments about what the time was and when we had to leave, but the fire was going and no-one was in a hurry. The previous night we fiddled with my helmet cam's SD card in LGF's phone, and somehow the time on that was now wrong too. When he set the time again to the "right" time we told him about, the phone asked if he moved between time zones. He set it anyway, still blissfully unaware that we were lying.

Eventually we left at 12:15. (Actually it was just before 10!)

Back in Prins Albert we stopped for refreshments. It was here LGF realized that something was amiss... Shame. After lots of laughter and taunting we put him out of his misery. And he set his time, again. He scored though. All of a sudden, his day had two extra hours! Bonus! Now he could be "Rustig" also.



I was keen to ride over Swartberg pass on the way back, but I was outvoted 4 to 1. So Meiringspoort it was.







And of course another stop at Herrie-se-plek in De Rust. It was HOT!

And finally Montagu Pass. It has become customary to end the ride here. Somehow it just seems right, and much better than at a garage or Wimpy or something. A last chat, a last laugh, a last time check.





We said our goodbyes and headed home.

And after the heat of the last two days the cool ocean air was a welcome sensation as I approached Glentana.



I sat reflecting on the ride afterward. This is such an awesome area with a myriad of routes to ride. But what makes it exceptional are the people you share it with. Thanks guys. One of those we'll remember.

Heading to the Moon

Early on the morning of the 26th the sun rose as I headed to the rendezvous point.



This is the best time of the day to be on a bike. Fresh air, beautiful scenery, all your senses tuned in to your surroundings. The smell of the ocean, the cold when the road dips, the contrasts between the shadows and the light. As starts to a weekend go, they don't come much better than this.

I was the last to arrive and found my riding buddies for the weekend in high spirits, already laughing and joking around.



Dusty, being the only lady on the ride, even got a present - a Barbie Lucky Packet!

Just before 6am we hit the road. Today we head North over the magnificent Outeniqua Pass (as opposed to Montagu Pass) to make up some time. Temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius has been forecast for the areas we'd be riding through, so we hit the road early to avoid the midday heat.

Outeniqua Pass ranks right up there with the best of them as far as scenic passes go. It is 14.5 kilometers long and was opened on 20 September 1951 by Paul Sauer, the then Minister of Transport. The original plans for Outeniqua Pass included two short tunnels near the summit, but in the end the route was taken over a neck in the mountain range, some 60 meters higher than the original route.



Just over the summit the road deposits you in Waboomskraal, an area famous for Hop farming.



Hops are a climbing plant. They are trained to grow up strings or wires which support the plants and allow them significantly greater growth with the same sunlight profile. The pants can be seen on both sides of the road in the photo below:



Hops are used in the beer making process. It's the ingredient that gives beer it's distinct bitter, tangy flavor.

A short way further we emerge out of this valley and into the Klein Karoo.

This is about 40km into the ride and we were settling into our rhythm now. Having ridden a lot less during 2012 I once again realized how much I missed it. I hope to take a lot more photos like these during 2013.

Just on the other side we regroup. It's still early, but it's clear that this is going to be a very hot day.



My pride and joy. Having ridden various new bikes over the past year, I appreciate this bike more and more.

Comfortable, versatile, reliable.



Soon we were on the road again heading for Prince Albert. The sun doesn't wait for anybody.
